Summary

In this chapter we discussed how MVPN can be offered in GSM/GPRS and UMTS environment. We introduced our version of GPRS and UMTS packet data access methods taxonomy which allowed us to discuss the details of private access technologies in more detail and with greater accuracy. We addressed the support of MVPNs based on CSD and packet data services offered by these systems. We also presented a brief case study, providing the reader with a high-level view of what is possible in carrier networks today and how they are likely to evolve. We repeat the same exercise in the next chapter, this time in a CDMA2000, a 3GPP2-specific environment.
