Site Driven Management

A simple, but effective, way of improving the performance of a server and the sites it supports is to make the management easier. With IIS 5 and earlier, there were two basic modes of operation for the IIS service?either it was on, or it was off.

Unfortunately, even sites that were unaffected by any of the configuration, content, or script changes would be shut down while the update took place.

In IIS 6, Web sites can be taken down individually (as they could in IIS 5). If your site is composed of static and dynamic components, you can also take down individual application pools while you update the dynamic components and leave the static elements available to clients.

To take down a site, rather than the entire server, just right-click on the Web site in IIS Manager and pause or stop the site.
