After finishing his Ph.D. at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich (ETHZ) in the area of database systems, Michael Rys went to Stanford University for a postdoc, where he worked on semi-structured databases and distributed heterogeneous information integration. In late 1998, he joined Microsoft Corporation in Redmond where he is now a program manager for SQL Server's XML technologies. He has been a regular presenter and panelist on XML and databases. Michael has previously worked for I. P. Sharp, ETHZ, and Reuters and is also a member of the W3C XML Query Language Working Group and a member of ACM and IEEE.
