Like many other industries, the WLAN world is bound to external forces?advances in technology, regulations of various bodies including governments, and the emergence of different standards and market demands. This chapter looks at standards and regulations, and it explores how market demands create "temporary" standards to address weaknesses in the WLAN industry while waiting for standard bodies to hammer out a more detailed solution. The WLAN industry has mastered this balance while still maintaining interoperability and by doing so with little technology or market fragmentation.
