Between the features of Query Analyzer and the text-based query-analysis tools, SQL Server provides you with a number of powerful utilities to analyze and understand how your queries will perform, and also to develop a better understanding of how queries in general are processed in SQL Server 2000. Such an understanding can only help ensure that your users' queries become more optimized through experience with the tools.

The tools discussed in this chapter are useful for analyzing individual query performance. If you want to monitor the overall performance for all SQL Server activity to evaluate your SQL Server configuration and identify potential performance bottlenecks, use Performance Monitor, which is discussed in the next chapter, "Monitoring SQL Server Performance."
